Great athletes and coaches are fearlessly embracing all sorts of new technologies in order to prepare for the big game tomorrow, yet they are still using ancient practices when it comes to public speaking.

Reports have come out that Tom Brady is using Virtual Reality technology to gain an upper hand for the Super Bowl this weekend. This should come as no surprise to any of us. The best of the best train with the best — both in people and technology — because keeping on top of your game is always a good plan if you want to succeed. We need to apply this thinking to building up our communications skills.

As is being reported by NBC, a few of the top NFL coaches have recently been scrutinized for using scripts and pre-written messaging in interviews, making them sound “stiff, robotic, and unnatural.” These are fearless athletes, who have faced incredible challenges and succeeded, yet they’re still stuck using scripts.

Anett Grant, CEO and Founder of Executive Speaking, has been using innovative technologies for coaching Executive leaders on how to speak spontaneously, without the need for scripts or pre-written messaging, for over 40 years. Her research on the topic of spontaneous speaking has also been published academically. “It’s More Than Just Talk: Patterns of CEO Impromptu Communication,” was featured in the SAGE Journal of Business and Professional Communication.

In this time of great innovation and technological breakthrough, it is time for great leaders to advance in all areas — this means their ability to speak spontaneously as well.
